Avondale United Methodist Church is located on 5th Avenue, South, in the South Avondale/Forest Park neighborhood, about 1 mile east of the Elton B. Stephens Expressway (a.k.a. “Red Mountain Expressway” and US31/US280).

Driving Directions

GPS Directions: Navigate using your GPS to 3829 5th Ave S, Birmingham, AL 35222

From Downtown: Take 5th Ave. S. east for 1.1 miles from the Elton B. Stephens Expwy (US 31/US280) overpass. The church is on the right just before the 40th St. intersection.

From Crestwood, Irondale, & Eastern Birmingham Neighborhoods: Take Crestwood Blvd. (US 78) toward downtown. Turn left onto 5th Ave. S. when Crestwood Blvd. becomes 4th Ave. S. Continue on 5th Ave. S. for approx. 6/10 of a mile. The church is on the left just past Avondale Park at the intersection of 5th Ave S. and 40th St. S.

Parking

Parking is available in a private lot on the western (toward downtown) side of the church along 5th Avenue. Parallel street parking is also available along both sides of 5th Avenue. Angled street parking is available on the western (church) side of 40th Street.

Sunday morning parking is also available at the Avondale Library lot, across 40th Street from the church. Please remove all cars from the library lot by 2:00 PM.

Handicap Accessibility

Avondale United Methodist strives to be a place of welcome to all people, regardless of physical abilities. However, because many parts of our facilities are over 100 years old, some parts of the church have limited handicap access. The following suggestions should help persons with physical challenges participate in the life of the church.

Designated handicap parking spaces are available in the 5th Avenue parking lot and along 40th Street.

Wheelchair accessibility:

• Sanctuary: Accessible from 40th St. via a wheelchair lift. Park on 40th St. in the handicap area and enter the door facing the alley on the Southeast corner of the sanctuary (the corner closest to Avondale Park). Note: this door is unlocked only on Sunday mornings and for other scheduled events in the sanctuary.
• Fellowship Hall: Accessible from the 5th Avenue entrance. Park in the 5th Avenue parking lot, enter the building, and take an immediate left to go through the kitchen.
• Church Office, Nursery, and Gymnasium: Accessible from 5th Avenue entrance. Park in the 5th Avenue parking lot, enter the building, and go up the ramp.
• Second and third floor classrooms: We are sorry, but these areas are not wheelchair accessible. Please contact the church office if you would like to participate in an event scheduled to take place in one of these areas. We will be glad to make accommodations by changing the event location or, if possible, providing assistance for accessing these areas.
