Holy Week and Easter Events

Holy Week

Holy Week is a time to remember the final week of Jesus' life.  It begins with Palm Sunday, marking Jesus' entry into Jerusalem before his crucifixion, and it ends with Easter, the celebration of Jesus' resurrection from the grave.  We invite you to join us on this journey, as we discover forgiveness, hope, and life in the cross and empty tomb.  There are many opportunities for worship, fellowship, and celebration.  Please contact the church office if you need further information about any of these events..

Palm Sunday Worship (Sunday, March 24, 11:00 am)

During Sunday morning worship we will retrace the steps of Jesus’ final entry into Jerusalem.  The service will begin on the front steps of the sanctuary; we will enter into the sanctuary waving palm branches and celebrating the determination of God to save us; and we will end the service at the foot of the cross remembering the depths of his love.  Those who are unable to join the processional are welcome to take their seats in the sanctuary prior to the service.

Nursery provided.

Community Cookout and Easter Egg Hunt (Sunday, March 24, 12:15 PM)

Following worship, we will share in a church picnic at the Avondale Park rose garden.  This year we’re teaming up with Christian Service Mission to sponsor a free cookout for the community.  The kids will join in an egg hunt at about 12:45pm after we have enjoyed our meals together.

Weekday Prayer Services (Monday-Friday, March 25-29, noon)

Each weekday, March 25-29, we will gather at noon in the sanctuary for a brief (20 minute) prayer service.  There will not be music or a sermon, only an opportunity to join our voices in prayer and our hearts in remembrance.

Maundy Thursday Service of Word and Table (Thursday, March 28, 6:30 pm)

Thursday marks Jesus’ last meal with his disciples, the event at which John says he gave them a new mandé, or command, to love one another with the sacrificial love expressed in the washing of feet.  Our service will begin at 6:30pm.  To remember this final meal, we will share in Holy Communion.  Following communion, the sanctuary is stripped of all decorations and the altar cross is draped in black, acknowledging the betrayal and suffering that Jesus underwent.

Nursery provided.

Good Friday Service of Darkness (Friday March 29, 6:30 pm)

We will gather at 6:30 in the sanctuary for a service of darkness, in which the story of Christ’s passion is read and we are asked to remember our sins for which Jesus died.  We leave the worship service in the silence of the darkness, remembering that this was the night the Son of God died.

Nursery provided.

Easter Sunrise Service (Sunday, March 31, 6:30 am)

Sunrise Service Graphic

The bible says that the disciples discovered the empty tomb on the morning of the third day.  We’ll gather at sunrise in Avondale Park amphitheater for a sunrise service.  The whole neighborhood is invited!  So, not only will it be great worship, but it will also be a great opportunity to engage our neighborhood with the good news of the resurrection.  Music will be provided by the Shades Mountain Brass ensemble.  And, don't forget, coffee and breakfast treats are served beginning at 6:15.  You don’t want to miss it!

Easter Sanctuary Service (March 31, 11:00 am)

Our sanctuary service on Easter will be a joyful celebration of Jesus’ triumph o’er the grave on the first Easter, and his promise that by his power and grace, we too will share in his resurrection.

Nursery provided.
