Ongoing Service OpportunitiesS.T.A.I.R. TutoringS.T.A.I.R., Start the Adventure in Reading, is a program designed to improve the reading skills and self-esteem of 2nd graders. There are stair sites throughout Birmingham, each serving the second-grade students at one elementary school. Students who do not read at grade level by 3rd grade are most likely to fall behind academically, beginning a negative cycle that follows them throughout school. STAIR seeks to break that cycle and cultivate children who love to read. At Avondale UMC, we serve second graders from Avondale Elementary School. Students are referred by their classroom teachers for help with reading skills. Students work one-on-one with a tutor two days a week for about an hour and a half after school. Tutoring spots are open for the 2012-2013 school year. All tutoring takes place at Avondale UMC. Contact the STAIR site coordinator, Alison Jenkins, for more information Alison Jenkins |
